Bronx Institute Awarded $12 Million Grant

Students in a Classroom

They may not know it yet, but 2,500 seventh-grade Bronx schoolchildren just received a $12 million windfall, thanks to the Bronx Institute at Lehman College. The Institute is the recipient of a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education for its Youth Development program. This program gives students from homes with great economic challenge the tools to succeed in high school right on through to college and then on to meaningful work.

The program focuses on providing students in grades 7-12 with enriched rigorous academic programs that build upon and extend the New York City public school curriculum. Students will receive preparation for the New York City specialized high schools and for New York State Regents exams, as well as for the SAT and ACT. Family members and students will also be invited to attend a series of introductory college awareness workshops.

"What is really important to the Institute is that we are preparing students to be resilient, self-reliant, and tenacious, as well as academically and professionally focused as they move through high school and post-secondary education," says Professor and Bronx Institute Executive Director Herminio Martinez.

Joining the Institute in its efforts are several organizations, including the New York City Department of Education, United Negro College Fund Special Projects, Fordham University, Harvard University, and the New York Public Library.
