Teacher of the Year Bruce Byland Speaks at Convocation

Professor Bruce Byland
As Teacher of the Year, Anthropology Professor Bruce Byland had the chance to speak on behalf of the faculty at this year's annual convocation ceremony. Professor Byland has taught at Lehman since 1984. He has conducted extensive research in his field, Pre-Columbian Mixtec civilization in Mexico, and has brought this first-hand information back into the classroom with him.
In one course, he directs students in hands-on work at the Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York, a National Historic Landmark site dating back to the colonial period. He also volunteer teaches in Westchester public schools about evolution and archaeology, and has taught groups of teachers about archaeological methods and interpretations at the Jay Center.
With support from a History Channel grant, he spends his Saturdays teaching middle and high school students about African-American history from colonial times to the Civil War again as a volunteer.
One student commented that after each class Professor Byland says thank you, but that it should be his students who thank him for his dedication.
