President Fernández honored three staff members at Convocation for their outstanding contributions to the College. Pictured with him, from left, are Deborah Valentino-Ewing, David Martinez, and Nora Roback.

Martinez, director of the Office of Financial Aid since 1998, has created a service delivery model that manages over $40 million a year in federal, state, and local financial aid and scholarship programs. Lehman's financial aid services are consistently rated among the highest in the CUNY system, and Lehman has been designated a "best practices" institution in this regard within the University. In presenting the award, President said that Martinez's "dedication and effectiveness as an administrator, and his commitment to innovation and collaboration, have made him an outstanding manager of this key operation."

Roback has served Lehman for more than 30 years as a secretary in the Department of Speech–Language–Hearing Sciences. Besides acquiring and sharing an in-depth knowledge of the College's policies and procedures, President Fernández said, "she has been an unofficial mentor to junior faculty and an encouraging supporter of our students, especially those who may find college an intimidating experience."

Valentino-Ewing, who manages the Records Unit in the Registrar's Office, began working in that office as a student. Since then, she has become the resident expert in managing the important files that follow students throughout their entire lives as they apply for jobs, graduate schools, and competitive exams. In addition to her accuracy, diligence, and good judgment, President Fernández said, "she is known for her kindness and diplomacy in explaining to students the strict guidelines that must be followed in changing names and providing access to these files."
