In presenting Dr. Foreman as a candidate for the Doctor of Science degree, Provost and Senior Vice President Dr. Mary Papazian cited the "remarkable growth, research, and innovation" that he had directed at Montefiore, including the opening of the Children's Hospital, advances with minimally invasive surgery, and new applications of technology to medicine.

At the same time, she added, he had remained committed to Montefiore's founding mission of service to the community. "The integrated system of community-based care established under your stewardship," she said, "is delivering high-quality, easily accessible healthcare across the North Bronx," including care to some of the most economically disadvantaged communities in the country.

In addition, she said, Dr. Foreman had succeeded where administrators at so many other hospitals had failed, by demonstrating that state-of-the-art healthcare can also be cost-effective.

Throughout his 35-year medical career, she concluded, his "effective and enlightened leadership" had helped to "move hospitals beyond their traditional roles and transform them into instruments of change for their communities."
