Not Much Time? You Can Still Make a Difference

Community Service
Students display some of the get-well cards they created for local vets.

Lehman students are involved in a new community service initiative—a series of one-day projects being offered both on- and off-campus from now until the end of October.

The first opportunity provided on campus took place September 19 in front of Shuster Hall, where students gathered to create get-well cards for patients in the local V.A. hospital on Kingsbridge Road. Future projects will include sewing "surgi dolls" for a local hospital and crocheting blankets for hospice patients. A surgi doll is a stuffed, blank doll used as a therapy device for children undergoing medical procedures.

"One-day service projects are a great opportunity for students who only have a limited amount of time to make a difference," said Associate Dean of Student Affairs John Holloway. "Limited commitments like these have the potential to pique a student's interest in donating even more time."

Service stations can be found at the following locations and times:

  • Friday, September 25: 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (The Oval)

  • Friday, October 5: 2-5 p.m. (The Oval)

  • Wednesday, October 17: 12-3 p.m. (The Cafeteria)

  • Friday, October 19: 2-5 p.m. (The Cafeteria)

  • Tuesday, October 23: 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (The Cafeteria)

In a recent off-campus project, students served food at the P.O.T.S. Community Kitchen, a soup kitchen on Webster Avenue that is run like a restaurant. Coming up on Saturday, September 29, from 12-3 p.m., students will put together hygiene kits for the homeless at St. Bartholomew's Church in Manhattan.
