In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Women's Studies Program will present a lecture by Professor Miguel Perez (Journalism, Communication, and Theatre), as well as a screening of the film From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale, on Thursday, October 11, from 6 to 8:40 p.m. in the East Dining Room.

Professor Perez is an award-winning reporter, columnist, and radio and television talk-show host. In his lecture, "America's Hidden Hispanic Heritage," he will argue that Latinos have lost sight of what it means to celebrate their heritage.

"It's great to give each other plaques, wear colorful costumes, and march in parades," explains Professor Perez, "but first we have to know why we are marching. Unfortunately, most young U.S. Latinos don't know their own history."

Produced by City Lore and Elena Martinez, From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale is a documentary chronicling the history of Latino music in the Bronx.

This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Journalism, Communication, and Theatre and the Department of Latin American and Puerto Rican Studies. For more information, call 718-960-1160.
