Dr. Herminio Martinez, executive director of the Bronx Institute and a professor in the Department of Middle and High School Education, was invited to speak at the 2007 American Council on Education (ACE) Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico on the success of the Institute's ENLACE Latino Collegiate Society.

Titled "Examples of Excelencia: Translating College Access into Success for Latino Students," the talk focused on the creation of the Collegiate Society and its role in promoting equity and excellence in education and learning among schoolchildren. The program's first cohort of fifty students have already graduated from high school and are attending some of the nation's most competitive colleges.

Recently, ENLACE received grants from United Way of New York City and Time Warner Inc., which has made it possible for them to identify a second cohort of high performing Latino students now in the ninth grade.

"We are gratified that the ENLACE Latino Collegiate Society has gained nationwide recognition as a model of educational excellence for Latino high school students of high academic potential," commented Dr. Martinez. "We look forward to sharing our methods for success with other such programs."
