Lehman College to Participate in National Global Warming Teach-in Jan. 31

Lehman College will join more than 1,000 schools, colleges and universities across the country in "Focus the Nation," an all-day teach-in January 31 on solutions to global warming. Organizers anticipate it will be the largest teach-in in U.S. history.

Hosted by the Lehman Department of Environmental, Geographic, and Geological Sciences (EGGS), the College's symposium will bring together students and academic experts to discuss the impact of global warming specifically on New York City and to present possible solutions. The event is free and open to the public and will take place from 10:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the Music Building's East Dining Room.

"Global warming is arguably the most important issue of our time, and our political leadership is just not talking about it," explains EGGS Professor Juliana Maantay. "Global warming and its associated impacts will have profound consequences for coastal areas like New York City, in terms of health, environmental and transportation infrastructure, livelihoods, the economy, housing, and human and natural resources."

Organized by a national coalition of educational, civic and business organizations, Focus the Nation aims to create an ongoing dialogue between decision-makers and the community. More than one million students are expected to take part in various aspects of the event. The Lehman symposium will feature a range of global warming presentations and discussions by faculty and guest speakers, as well as a screening of the Academy Award-winning film An Inconvenient Truth.

Delivering the keynote address at 1 p.m. will be Dr. Radley Horton of the Center for Climate Systems Research, Columbia University, Goddard Institute for Space Studies/National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Dr. Horton will speak on "Climate Change and the New York City Region."
