Lehman's Psychology Department was ranked in the nation's top 100 psych departments for receiving external research and development funding, according to the National Science Foundation (N.S.F.) analysis for 2004. For comparison, Brown University was ranked 93rd, Emory University 95th, and the University of Denver 98th. Only two CUNY psychology departments, Hunter (in 47th place) and Lehman (in 97th place), made this N.S.F. ranking.

After reviewing demographic data subsequently collected by the University of Oklahoma*, the Lehman department also discovered that it was tied for fourth place in having the smallest psychology faculty among the top 100. Adjusting all of the N.S.F.-reported R&D expenditures for faculty size, Lehman would then rank in 60th place by this measure. Using this analytic procedure, U.C.L.A. ranked 56th, Notre Dame 58th, Washington University of St. Louis 64th, SUNY Binghamton 72nd, SUNY Buffalo 76th, SUNY Stony Brook 88th, and Emory 96th.

If non-federal grants are taken out of the calculation, still adjusting for faculty size, Lehman would move up even higher, ranking 44th nationally. Using this procedure, by comparison, Yale ranked 31st, the University of Pennsylvania 38th, Hunter 46th, UCLA 56th, and SUNY Binghamton 79th.

"We are elated over this achievement that highlights the creativity and productivity of our faculty," said Dr. Alan Kluger, chair of the Lehman department.
