Freshman Attributes Success to College Now Program

Luis Royo

Aspiring film director Luis Royo dreams of making it to Hollywood, but first on his to-do list is getting a college education. Royo is currently enrolled at Lehman as a SEEK student and is studying mass communication. How he got here can be traced in part to Lehman's College Now program.

As a student at the Bronx Theatre High School, Royo travelled almost two hours to get to school. Despite a demanding schedule, Royo enrolled in Lehman's College Now program in his junior year—a decision that he feels, in retrospect, was the best move he made. Besides earning college credits, he says, the program helped to better prepare him for the demands and stresses of college life.

"Had I not taken those courses," he explains, "I don't think I would have done as well in my first semester of college."

College Now provides high school students with enrichment workshops and access to credit-bearing college-level courses. Participants also receive an early introduction to the college environment and a jump-start on college coursework.

Pedro Baez, director of College Now at Lehman, and Program Coordinator David Gantz, were recently invited to speak about the program at the New York State Regents Advisory Committee in Albany. There they presented a short video of Royo talking about his experience in the program.
