Lehman to Host Day-Long 'Dropout Summit II' Feb. 22

Lehman College will host Dropout Summit II, a day-long conference focusing on furthering research in dropout prevention and developing action plans and timelines to address this pressing problem. The conference, which will begin at 9:45 a.m. in the Lovinger Theatre on February 22, will feature expert panels and remarks by elected officials from the City, State, and Federal government. A limited number of seats are available to the public for this free event, so registration is required.
Summit participants will attend strategy groups, where they will focus on formulating policy recommendations and setting targets and timelines to reduce the number of high school dropouts in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Special guests include Assemblyman Michael Benjamin; New York State Deputy Secretary for Education Dr. Manny Rivera; New York State First Lady Silda Wall Spitzer; New York City Councilwoman Gale Brewer; former West Virginia Governor Bob Wise; New York City Councilman John Liu; New York State Commissioner Gladys Carrión, Esq.; New York City Councilwoman Darlene Mealy; New York City Councilman Miguel Martinez; and U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education and Director of the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education Dr. Grover J. Whitehurst. New York City Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott will deliver the keynote address.
The conference is sponsored by Directions For Our Youth, Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 by three young minority professionals to address increasing dropout rates and overall student apathy throughout the New York City public school system.
