C.A.S.A. to Celebrate Dominican Independence Day Feb. 26

The Campus Association for Student Activities (C.A.S.A.) will honor the life of Lehman alumnus Francisco Chapman-Veloz with a special celebration, titled "Raices y Orgullos de mi Patria" ("Roots and Pride of My Country"), to coincide with Dominican Independence Day. The entire campus is invited to the free event, which will be held in the Lovinger Theatre on February 26 from 6-9 p.m.

The program, which is also sponsored by the University's Dominican Students Society and Lehman's Dominican Students Association, will feature performances by Edwin "El Salsero," La Supremacia Tipica, La 21 Division, and others. Professor Chapman-Veloz donated his personal library, numbering in excess of 1,000 volumesl, to C.A.S.A., which plans to donate the Spanish-titled books to the Libreria Publica de San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic. The remaining portion of the collection, about 500 books, will be donated to the Leonard Lief Library.

Professor Chapman-Veloz was born in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. After his university studies at the College of Staten Island and Lehman College, he went on to earn his Ph.D. in history and anthropology from New York University, as well as a Ph.D. from the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts–Amherst. He was an associate professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and an associate of research at the Trotter Institute of the University of Massachusetts.
