If subway delays or rush-hour traffic has ever stressed you out, Lehman alumnus Dr. Stewart Bitkoff ('73, M.S.) may have the answer: turn that daily commute into a step along the road to spiritual tranquility.

Dr. Bitkoff, a veteran educator and a student of mysticism, who has also endured many long commutes to work, has written A Commuter's Guide to Enlightenment (Llewellyn Worldwide, 2008). This expanded version of a shorter work he self-published in 2004 is available at bookstores and online.

With tips, exercises, and personal stories, Dr. Bitkoff demonstrates how we can live in the present while experiencing a higher level of consciousness—and at the same time keep our eyes on the road. The goal of a spiritual journey, he believes, is to uncover your own answers and then use them to make the world a better place.

A graduate of SUNY Cortland, Dr. Bitkoff earned his Ed.D. from New York University and has taught at Iona College, where he was a clinical field instructor in the Department of Social Work, at Northampton Community College, where he was an instructor/job coach, and at Lehman, where he was an assistant professor teaching courses on therapeutic recreation and recreation for the developmentally disabled.

Dr. Bitkoff currently teaches at "Shooting for the Moon" Spiritual Development Center, a holistic and esoteric learning center in Snydersville, Penn., where he also serves on the Center's advisory board. More information about his books and writings can be found at www.thedeeganproject.com.
