Carl Mazza
Professor Carl Mazza
Lehman College will host a seminar April 8 on the challenges people face after incarceration, the possibilities for their success and the ways the community can help them reenter society. The discussion will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Faculty Dining Room at Lehman and is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Contact Hanh Tran at hanh_tran@nycares.org or 212-402-1116.

The seminar is co-sponsored by The College Initiative, the Lehman College Social Work Club, and New York Cares, a nonprofit organization.

Panelists will include Lehman Professor Carl Mazza; Glenn E. Martin, associate vice president of policy and advocacy at the Fortune Society, Inc.; Lehman social work major Dwight Stephenson; a representative of New York Cares; and several students from The College Initiative, which was established last year by the City University of New York as a reentry, adult degree program.

Professor Mazza will discuss his experiences counseling families with transitioning members and running support groups for those coming home from prison. He has taught inmates in maximum security prisons across New York State for 25 years.

At the Fortune Society, Martin works with policy makers to remove roadblocks facing those who have been incarcerated. As codirector of the Legal Action Center's National H.I.R.E. Network, he previously worked to increase job opportunities for ex-offenders.

Stephenson, who graduated with honors from Borough of Manhattan Community College in 2006, will discuss the challenges he faced after incarceration. In 2007, he received the Belle Zeller Scholarship, one of CUNY's highest student honors. A member of the Lehman class of 2008, he plans to remain at the College to pursue his master's degree.
