Quebec, a Village and its Artists
Quebec, a Village and its Artists
From February 14 to April 27, 2008
Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec

Quebec may be a few hundred miles north of the Bronx, but that isn't stopping Lehman from joining in the celebration of the city's 400th anniversary. The College will sponsor two free events in April—a musical program featuring the Quebec actor and singer Jean Brassard on April 3 and a talk by a Canadian historian about "Expo 67" on April 14.

Brassard will present his performance-presentation, entitled "Un homme et une femme" ("A Man and a Woman"), at 12:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Music Building. Performing in French with commentary in English, he will be accompanied by pianist and singer Kathleen Landis in a program that will include songs in honor of the anniversary. Hand-outs of the songs will be available. This event is sponsored by The City and the Humanities program at Lehman.

On April 14, Prof. Magali Deleuze of the Royal Military College of Canada will discuss "Montréal's Expo 67: The Discovery of Quebec's Pride and Modernity." A specialist in Canadian history, particularly Canadian and Québécois foreign policy since 1945, she will give an illustrated lecture (in English) about the transformative aspects of the world's fair that was held in Montreal in 1967. This event will be held at 3 p.m. in the Lehman College Art Gallery and is sponsored by the College's Division of Arts and Humanities.

Professor Thomas Spear (Languages and Literatures), a leading authority on contemporary French and Francophone literature, is currently teaching a course on Quebec literature (in French), as well as an interdisciplinary course (in English) "Québec at 400 (1608-2008)," which will be offered again in the fall.

Events will be held throughout the year, both in Quebec and throughout Canada, including dance and film series, parades, concerts, over 2,000 street performances, and numerous conferences. A complete listing can be found at the Quebec City 1608-2008 Website.
