Rainbow Alliance Club to Host Mock Same-Sex Wedding on April 30

Lehman College's Rainbow Alliance Club will stage a mock wedding ceremony to demonstrate its members' commitment to the cause of legalizing same-sex marriage. The event, which will feature all the accoutrements of a proper wedding, will take place on Wednesday, April 30, at 4 p.m. in the East Dining Room. The campus community is invited to attend.
Speaking at the event will be a representative from New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn's office. The ceremony will be followed by a reception with a performance by Switch N' Play, a New York-based drag alliance group. A fashion show will also take place during the reception, with designs by Lehman sophomore Jorge Rosario.
Established in 2004, the Rainbow Alliance aims to provide a safe place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students to voice their concerns and to promote equality and diversity in the College.
"I think this type of event is important because LGBT people are systematically oppressed in this country and people in the Bronx have not yet become publicly aware and active on the needs of this marginalized group," says club president Briana Urbina.
