Lehman College will welcome back Dr. Elliot Melendez '95 as a guest speaker at the Pre-Health Professions meeting on Wednesday, May 14. The talk, which is open to all students, will be held in Davis Hall, Room 335 at 2 p.m.

A high school dropout from the South Bronx, Dr. Melendez entered Lehman in 1989 after earning his GED. Working full-time while attending class, he was forced to leave school during his junior year to support his wife and newborn child. But his determination led him to return two years later and ultimately to graduate cum laude with a biology major in 1995.

Subsequently admitted to Harvard Medical School, Dr. Melendez graduated from there in 1999 and is currently in the Pediatric Critical Care department at the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. His research focuses on the evaluation of severe infection in infants and children, and he is also involved in a telemedicine initiative with the Hospital Buen Samaritano in rural Puerto Rico in which knowledge and expertise are shared via telemedicine technology.

"We proudly celebrate Dr. Melendez's accomplishments in medical research and medical practice," said Dr. Clarence Branch, Lehman's Pre-Health Professions adviser. "His noted accomplishments provide inspirational encouragement for all of our students presently enrolled in the various pre-health professions courses at Lehman."
