Lehman alumnus Reginald Stroughn '77, principal of Hempstead High School, has been named 2008 New York State High School Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State. He will be honored at a special ceremony on May 9 in Saratoga Springs.

A graduate of C.W. Post College, Stroughn holds a master's degree in recreation therapy from Lehman and a master's in administration and supervision from CUNY. For thirteen years, he has served as a school administrator, mostly in the Hempstead public school system.

Stroughn is credited with turning around a school that had a reputation for being out of control and unsafe. During his tenure, the school has seen an increase in attendance and graduation rates and a decrease in school violence.

As New York's High School Principal of the Year, Stroughn is now a candidate for the award of National High School Principal of the Year, an award sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
