Celebrating Family Diversity
Professor Chen-Hayes and his civil union partner, Lance, a pediatric physical therapist, are the parents of a five-year-old son (pictured on the cover). They also are the authors of a manuscript currently in review, Double Dads, One Son: A Chinese-American Rainbow Family/Liang Ge Baba Qia Qia Hao.
In addition to his work in counselor education, Professor Chen-Hayes is active in community service as a member of the New Jersey Gay Men's Chorus, Rainbow Families of New Jersey, and the Family Equality Council, as an organizer for Jumpstart's Read for the Record, and at his son's school, Ying-Hua Day School, the first Pre-K-12 dual language Mandarin immersion school in the United States, assisting with staff development and consulting on the school's bilingual school counseling program.
The Chen-Hayes family previously graced the Gay Parent cover in the spring of 2004, and the story of their relationship, having a child through surrogacy, and their parenting experience as a dual-national, multiracial, and multilingual family also has appeared in the Mount Holyoke alumni magazine and numerous Chinese-language national news publications.
