Student Wins Second Scholarship to Prestigious Fiction Workshop

Lehman junior John Paul Infante has won not one, but two scholarships to fiction-writing programs this summer. Infante is in his third year in the CUNY B.A. program, double majoring in cross-cultural literature and creative writing at Lehman.

His latest summer scholarship is for the VONA/Voices Workshop in San Francisco, where he will study with acclaimed fiction writer Thomas Glave. The organization and workshop were cofounded by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Diaz. Like Diaz, Infante emigrated from the Dominican Republic as a child.

Infante recently was awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious New York State Summer Writers Institute at Skidmore College. He was one of only 28 winners selected for the highly coveted opportunity to study and spend time with some of the most prominent names in contemporary writing. Past visiting writers have included Joyce Carol Oates, Jay McInerney, and William Kennedy.

Infante won the scholarship with his short story "Without a Big One There Ain't Love." Written in the second person, present tense, the work chronicles a few days in the life of a nine-year-old boy who is unaware that his father is in jail and his mother is abusing drugs.
