Lehman College Art Gallery Reception Oct. 7

Surprisingly Natural: The Nature of the Bronx
The Lehman College Art Gallery will host a reception for its current exhibits—Tony Bechara's "Grand Canyon," Elizabeth Jobim's "Endless Lines," and "Surprisingly Natural: The Nature of the Bronx"—on Tuesday, October 7, at 6 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

Bechara's paintings are described as dynamic fields set into motion by the interaction of color. In "Grand Canyon," he uses black, white, and gray paint on a bold, black grid. The painting resembles pixels of a digital image. Through his work, Bechara explores the optics of light and the perception of color through geometric abstraction that is both formalist and conceptual.

In "Endless Lines," Jobim paints rows of lines and shapes on a rectangular-shaped canvas. "The work is about visual relationships, process, and translation from one incarnation to the next," explains Art Gallery Director Susan Hoeltzel. "It is about surface and saturation, boundaries and edges, flow and rhythm."

"Surprisingly Natural: The Nature of the Bronx" is a collaborative effort by the College, Wave Hill, and the Bronx River Art Center. The collection of photographs explores the borough's parkland, community and school gardens, playgrounds, window boxes, tree pits, forest, wetlands, empty lots, and beach habitats. The exhibit's composers include Daniel Hauben, Margaret Moulton, Travis Roozée, Robert Stephenson, Rebecca Swanson, and Lawerence Lederman.

On Thursday, October 16, at 12:30 p.m., visitors to the gallery can meet the artists and take a special tour of the exhibits. Lawrence Lederman will speak on behalf of "Surprisingly Natural."

The exhibits will remain open from now until December 15. The Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. For more information, call 718-960-8731.
