English Professor Featured in Italian Newspaper

English Professor Grace Bullaro was featured in a news article in the Italian newspaper America Oggi on her recent lecture at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute at Queens College. Her talk focused on her forthcoming book, "From 'Terrone' to 'Extra-Comunitario': The Evolution of Racism in Italian Cinema."

The presentation offered an overview of the current "migration cinema," tracing the evolution of the discourse on "racism" from the 1950s to the current wave of films by directors like Gianni Amelio, Carlo Mazzacurati, Francesco Munzi, and Ferzan Ozpetek. In her new work, Professor Bullaro raises the question of what it means to be "Italian" in today's multicultural Italy.

Professor Bullaro is the author of Beyond Life is Beautiful: Comedy and Tragedy in the Cinema of Roberto Benigni (Leicester, England: Troubador Publishing Ltd., 2005) and Man in Disorder: The Cinema of Lina Wertmuller in the 1970s (Troubador Publishing Ltd., 2006).
