The W.K. Kellogg Foundation recently awarded a grant to the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (N.H.C.S.L.) to study best practices developed by the Bronx Institute's ENLACE Latino Collegiate Society. Representatives of the legislative group's education committee visited the Bronx Institute at Lehman on December 5 and 6 to learn more about its ENLACE program.

The N.H.C.S.L. represents the interests of Hispanic state legislators from all states, commonwealths, and territories by serving as a catalyst for joint action on issues of common concern, such as housing, immigration, education, and healthcare to all segments of the Hispanic community.

During the visit, the group sat in on a number of classes, starting with Professor Angela Kelly's tenth-grade physics seminar, where students studied light, color, and the electromagnetic spectrum. Next, it was on to Amanda Bickerstaff's cultural anthropology class on Bedouin poetry. The group's classroom visits ended with an eighth-grade class in Conexiones: Diasporic Literature and the Geographics of Our Lives,” led by Jessica Fei, assistant director of ENLACE.

As a result of the visit, Professor Herminio Martinez, executive director of the Institute, was invited to present the ENLACE Latino Collegiate Society model at N.H.C.S.L.'s annual conference in April 2009. About the visit, Professor Martinez said, "It was gratifying to receive such enthusiastic feedback on a program we have worked diligently over the last few years to develop. Development of the program is an ongoing and dynamic process."
