Free Holiday Concert Dec. 21

Music Notes
The Lehman College Community Band will celebrate the holiday season with "A Holiday Hurrah," a free concert featuring a mix of holiday music and classics for wind band. This event, which is open to the campus community, will take place on Sunday, December 21, at 2 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre.

Led by Professor Alan Hollander of the Music Department, the band will perform works by Anderson, Hazo, Longfield, Sparke, Persechetti, Williams, and others. In a special performance, senior Yumi Suehiro will perform Gershwin's tour de force for piano, Rhapsody in Blue. Originally from Osaka, Japan, Suehiro has played piano and marimba since age seven and at age 12 won the Kobe International Music Competition's Performance Award. At Lehman, she studies with Professors Morris Lang and Peter Vinograde and also plays in the Jazz Band and Latin Jazz Ensemble.

The band's conductor, Professor Hollander, has performed as a soloist with numerous ensembles throughout the New York metropolitan area and has conducted the American Wind Ensemble, the Larchmont Symphony, the Westchester Pops, and other regional ensembles. In addition, he is active as a clinician and conductor in public school music programs throughout New York State, leading All-County and All-State Festival Ensembles. He was director of Music and Instrumental Ensembles in the Edgemont Public Schools for twenty-seven years, and for the past eight years has been musical director of the Westchester Band.
