Eighth Annual Jerome G. Sala Scholarship Competition March 27 and 28
To qualify, entrants must reside in the lower Hudson Valley region, including New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, and northern New Jersey. Candidates are required to perform a solo suitable for wind band, such as Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto or Chaminade Concertino for Flute. It is strongly recommended that participants bring an accompanist or accompaniment audio CD. Contestants will be judged both on technical skill and artistic presentation.
The winner of the first prize will receive a $500 scholarship and perform his or her piece with the Lehman College Community Band in concert on Sunday, May 17. The runner-up will have the opportunity to perform with the band at a later date, schedule permitting.
Previous winners include Evan Ocheret and Sainatee Suarez of Edgemont H.S., Benjamin Rutkowski of Bronx H.S. of Science, Emily Redmersky of Blind Brook H.S., Noah Tucker of New Rochelle H.S., and Omar Calixto of the Celia Cruz Bronx H.S. of Music.
The competition is named after the late Jerome Sala, a member of the music faculty at Lehman College. For twent years, he taught music history and instrumental methods at the College and directed the Lehman College Community Band.
