The CUNY Institute for Health Equity at Lehman officially opened its doors April 30 with an inaugural ceremony in the College's Art Gallery. Headed by Lehman Health Sciences Professor Marilyn Aguirre-Molina, the Institute will work to expand knowledge and resources in health sciences for Lehman and the wider community.

"This institute represents CUNY's first venture to address health equity throughout New York City in a multidisciplinary way," said Professor Aguirre-Molina, who was recently appointed to the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Health Marketing at the Centers for Disease Control. She said that the scholarly and applied work produced by the Institute will improve understanding of the health disparities that impact New York's underserved and low-income populations.

The Institute will work directly with fourteen community organizations in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, including Mothers on the Move, African Hope Committee, and Brooklyn Young Mothers Collective. It has three core objectives:

  • building the capacity of non-profit and community-based organizations to address health problems in their communities;
  • providing learning opportunities for students to work toward health equity; and
  • strengthening multidisciplinary cooperation and research on health equity issues both within and beyond CUNY.
