Two New Deans Appointed
"We are very pleased to have accomplished and highly experienced scholars and educators such as Dr. Alborn and Dr. Jarroll serving in the role of dean at Lehman," said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Mary Papazian. "Their guidance will be instrumental in supporting the important ongoing research of division faculty members, while building the infrastructures that foster student success."
Dr. Alborn, whose academic interests include British history and the history of imperialism, science, and business, joined the Lehman faculty in 1999 as an assistant professor. Prior to coming to Lehman, he taught at Harvard University and currently holds a faculty appointment at the CUNY Graduate Center. The author of Conceiving Companies: Joint-Stock Politics in Victorian England, Dr. Alborn also has written several book chapters as well as articles that have appeared in Victorian Studies, Journal of Modern History, History of Science, Journal of Victorian Culture, and other scholarly publications. He holds a B.A. from Harvard College and a Ph.D. from Harvard University and succeeds Dr. Marlene Gottlieb, who served as dean from 1998-2008 and retired from Lehman in 2008 after forty years of service.
Dr. Jarroll comes to Lehman from Northeastern University, where he was a member of the biology faculty since 1996. He held a number of leadership roles at Northeastern, including associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, director of the Graduate School, and chair of the Department of Biology. His non-academic appointments include working as a consulting biologist for Viromed Labs, Premier Medical Technology, and other companies.
Dr. Jarroll has received many grants for his research from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Education. His research has been published widely in a number of journals, including The Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, The Journal of Biological Chemistry, and The Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry. Dr. Jarroll received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from West Virginia University. He succeeds Dr. William Tramontano, presently the Provost of Brooklyn College, who served as Lehman's dean of Natural and Social Sciences from 2003-2008.
Dr. Papazian expressed the appreciation of the College to the faculty members who served as interim deans during the national search that was conducted for both deans: Dr. Deena Bernstein (Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences), acting dean of Arts and Humanities, and Dr. Robin Kunstler (Health Sciences), acting dean of Natural and Social Sciences. She also thanked the members and chairs of the respective search committees, Professor Kenneth Schlesinger (Leonard Lief Library) and Dr. Eric Delson (Anthropology).
