Wed., Sept. 6, 2006 - Irish Language Conversation Circle @ 7PM, Rambling House, Woodlawn, Bronx.

The greater public are invited to participate in an Irish language conversation circle. Beginners to fluent speakers are welcome. The Rambling House (restaurant section), corner of East 236th Street & Katonah Avenue in Woodlawn, 7PM-8:30PM. Free.

Wed., Sept. 13, 2006 - The Leaf that Launched a Thousand Ships: A Personal and Unnatural History of the Great Hunger @ 7PM, Lehman College Faculty Dining Room

The CUNY-IIAS and the Department of Biological Sciences, Lehman College, invite the greater public to a lecture on the scientific side of the Great Irish Famine. Our speaker will be Dr. Douglas Daly of the New York Botanical Gardens. This free event will take place in the Faculty Dining Room of the Music Building at Lehman College from 7PM-8:30PM. Refreshments will be served. Reservations at cunyiias@lehman.cuny.edu or 718-960-6722 are appreciated, but not required.

The CUNY-IIAS has previously invited Adrian Flannelly and Fr. Colm Campbell to speak about issues related to Irish immigration. This semester, our speaker will be Kelly Fincham of the extremely active Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform.

The New School & CUNY Institute for Irish-American Studies cordially invite you to attend a conversation with Bob Kerrey, President, The New School & Paul Crotty, U.S. District Court Judge, entitled "Commentary: Irish American Participation in American Democracy." The event will take place on Thursday, September 21, 2006 in Arnhold Hall, 55 West 13th Street (between Fifth & Sixth Avenues), 2nd floor, New York City. A Reception will take place from 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. in the Tishman Gallery and then the Discussion at 6:00 p.m. in the Theresa Lang Community and Student Center. Wed., Sept. 27, 2006 - Elizabeth I - Brothers and Mothers: The Irish as England's Most Intimate and Threatening Others @ 7PM, Lehman College Library Atrium (2nd Floor)

Lehman College's Leonard Lief Library will host the traveling exhibition 'Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend' (August 23 to October 6), which commemorates the 400th anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth I of England. The CUNY-IIAS will be co-sponsoring a lecture on September 27 by Dr. Clare Carroll which will look at the Irish-English relations at the time of Queen Elizabeth I.
