The Center for Great Irish Famine & Irish Immigration Studies is a research unit of the CUNY Institute for Irish-American Studies. The Center coordinates grant funded research projects, organizes distance education lectures and tours, and sponsors public lectures on topics related to Great Irish Famine curricula and the teaching about Irish immigration to the United States. Distance Education: Twenty-four social studies high school teachers visited Famine sites and museums in the west of Ireland during Spring Recess 2005. A half-hour documentary of this trip was produced by CUNYTV and airs August 24, 2005 at 10am, 3pm, and 8pm. This fall, a distance education course will be offered emphasizing lower Manhattan sites related to famine immigration. See ColumbusDayWeekendAd2005.html . During Spring Recess 2006, the Center will host another series of lectures and tour to Ireland. This time the focus will be on the south of Ireland and Famine immigration. Public Lectures : A number of researchers in this line of inquiry have been invited to speak at Institute events. In the Fall of 2004, Prof. Maureen Murphy of Hofstra University presented on the topic of "Implementing the New York State Great Irish Famine Curriculum." Prof. Margaret Mulrooney of Marymount University also presented on the topic of "The Great Irish Famine: a historical account of famine immigration." In Spring 2005, the Center sponsored three lectures on this topic with the following speakers: Prof. Joe Lee of Univeristy College Cork/New York University spoke on "Recent Perspectives on the Great Famine 1845-52," Dr. Christine Kinealy of the University of Central Lancashire with James Mullin presented on "The New Jersey Great Irish Famine Curriculum," and Dr. Cormac Ó Gráda of University College Dublin lectured on "Recent Comparative Perspectives on the Famine." This semester, we will be hosting a symposium on "Documentaries of the Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the Great Irish Famine." The all-day event on Friday, November 18th will include documentaries that aired on PBS, RTÉ, and BBC between 1995 and 2001, the 150th anniversary of the Great Famine.
