[Please note that the textbooks indicated above are the primary texts used in the courses. The instructor for any course may request that you obtain additional learning materials for a given course. Please also note that the midterm and the final exams are taken face-to-face part of the course. ]

On-line & hybrid courses are taught using the Blackboard online teaching system which is extremely user friendly.

New lectures are posted each week and contain classwork, handouts, sound files, photos, video clips, exercises and assignments.

Log on whenever suits you. Read all the lectures, play the games, do the quizzes, submit homework and practice your pronunciation. 

It's one of the fastest, easiest & most enjoyable ways to learn the Irish language. Log on two times a week whenever it is most convenient for you.  

 

IRI 103 Elementary Irish I (3 Credits)

This hybrid course is suitable for students who have little or no prior knowledge of the Irish language. Students will learn the basics (talking about yourself, describing day to day things, simple conversations in different situations) then progress fast to learn how to understand, speak and write the Irish language at beginners level.

IRI 104 Elementary Irish I (3 Credits)

This hybrid course is suitable for students who have spent 45 hours learning the language in a classroom or on-line setting. Students will continue to learn the basic (talking about yourself, describing day to day things, simple conversations in different situations) and continue with learning how to understand, speak and write the Irish language at beginners level.

IRI 105 Elementary Irish III (3 Credits)

This hybrid course is suitable for students who have sufficient prior knowledge of the Irish Language or who have completed Elementary Irish 1 & 2. This course will focus on building confidence to gain fluency in the language.

IRI 201: Intermediate Irish Grammar (3 Credits)

Suitable for intermediate level students of Irish. Monitor their own use of Irish grammar and observe grammar in the use of literature as well as their own written and oral production. This course can also serve as a refresher course for more advanced students.

IRI 202: Intermediate Irish Reading & Composition (3 Credits)

The aim of this course is to teach intermediate level students of Irish the ability to write compositions on topics ranging from contemporary themes to the more abstract. Reading short texts and writing a reaction to the text will form a central part of the course. The material covered in this course is necessary as students grow in their ability to eventually take literature courses through the medium of Irish. This course can also serve as a refresher course for more advanced students.

IRI 285: Individualized Intermediate Foreign Language Study (1 Credit)

Independent study in Irish generally linked to a course in another field. PREREQ: IRI 105 or Departmental permission. Note: May be repeated up to 4 times.

IRI 300: Introduction to Literary Studies (3 Credits)

This course will introduce students to literary genres and principles of literary analysis through readings of representative texts of Irish language literature. PREREQ: IRI 202 or Departmental permission. 

IRI 320: Introduction to the Irish Short Story (3 Credits)

Survey course of the short story genre in the Irish language, extensive reading, and composition. PREREQ: IRI 202 or departmental permission.

IRI 385: Individualized Advanced Foreign Language Study (1 Credit)

Independent study in Irish generally linked to a course in another field. PREREQ: Two semesters of IRI 285 or Departmental permission. Note: May be repeated up to 4 times.
