Text Box: Thousands of books and journals issued by Irish-American publishing houses in the 1800’s have become extremely brittle and are being restricted in public access. With them will disappear a chapter in the history of the Irish-American people. The Center for the Preservation of Irish-American Publications is pioneering an effort to prevent this from happening. The City University of New York is leading a team from Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, and Iona College to preserve at least 2,000 of the estimated 10,000 books and journals published in Irish-America between 1820 and 1922. In addition to making preservation quality digital image files, the Center is also mounting searchable image and text files on the Internet for researchers and the public to use free of charge. Should there be adequate support, the entire 10,000 volume collection will be preserved for all to enjoy.

It costs about $100 per book to complete the preservation and public access project . While we have completed over 45 books, our current funding for this project will cease in April 2006. Please take a moment to read further information by clicking here which describes how your association or business can keep this project in operation.
