Public Safety Tips
- Secure your property (cell phones, iPods, cameras, etc.) and keep it in your possession at all times.
- Report any unattended property immediately to Public Safety.
- Carefully monitor and secure your wallet, purse, credit cards, driver's license and photo identification cards at all times.
- Be aware of your surroundings and report any unusual behavior or incidents to Public Safety.
Lehman College's faculty and student parking lots have had two vehicle break-ins where detachable GPS systems were stolen.
Thefts of detachable Global Positioning Systems (G.P.S.) are sharply on the rise. They are quickly becoming not only the hottest car accessory for drivers, but for thieves, too. Satellite-based navigation systems are now the top item stolen from cars. "They are high-end items and they can bring in quick cash."
Sharp-eyed thieves may spot the faint mark of the suction cup used to position the system on the dashboard or windshield and are even "hitting" cars where the device is not visible. Thieves will notice the suction mark, break into a car and then look under the seats and in the glove compartment for the device.
Prevention
Here are some tips and suggestions to help avoid such thefts:
- remove the G.P.S. system from your vehicle whenever you leave your car.
- register the serial number of your device with the manufacturer.
Remember to report any crimes, suspicious persons and/or questionable activities immediately to the Public Safety Department at 718-960-7777.
The mission of the Public Safety Department is to provide a safe and secure campus community.
