
Welcome
The Public Service Leadership Institute at Lehman College is a two-year program designed to prepare high school juniors to understand and become involved in the political system. After completing the program, students will have achieved the following:
- earned at least six college credits in political science
- completed a paid eight-week internship in the office of an elected official, government agency, public advocacy office, or non-profit organization
- received assistance in completing the college application and enrollment process
- become knowledgeable about the legislative process from first-hand experience
This program will enable students to develop essential skills necessary for successful leadership in the public policy field. Major emphasis will be on skills critical to building their effectiveness in the public domain. Students will develop the following skills:
- Communication
- Conflict resolution
- Decision making
- Advocacy
- Group dynamics
Students will also hone their skills in the following areas:
- Action research
- Writing
- Debating
- Public speaking
- Problem solving
- Internet research
- Media literacy
