
Program Schedule
The program will admit 25 high school juniors by January 15, 2010. The schedule for the group is divided into three phases.
January to June
- Complete a course in American government that meets on Saturdays at the Lehman campus
- Be assigned, after discussion, an internship site for the summer
- Complete paperwork for a paid internship
- Work with a mentor
- Interact with high-profile community and business leaders
- Visit the New York State Legislature, observe its work, and meet legislators and staff
- Study the legislative process
- Conduct research on issues to be addressed by the legislature
- Prepare a policy paper that formalizes the issues selected and informs public policy
July and August
- Complete an eight-week internship, supervised by Leadership Institute staff
- Students must visit their internship site on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of each week
- Maintain a journal about their experiences
- Meet once each week (Thursday) on the Lehman campus
- Receive payment for their internship participation during this cycle
September to June
- If qualified, complete two college-credit Political Science courses: one in the fall and one in spring.*
- Receive assistance with college applications, applications for financial aid, and scholarship research.
*In order to qualify for college credit, a student must receive a grade of 75 or better on the English Language Arts (ELA) Regents, or earn a score of 480 on the SAT Verbal/Critical Reading section. It is expected that participating students will take the ELA Regents by the end of their junior year.
