SI Faculty

SI faculty participation is essential to the success of the SI program. SI instructors welcome SI Leaders into their classes, assist in promoting the program to students, and discuss goals and strategies for effective teaching and learning throughout the term with the SI Leaders and the SI Coordinator and supervision team. The students benefit through opportunities to review course content and skills with a trained facilitator (the SI Leader) outside of class. The SI Leaders benefit from the mentoring provided by their SI instructors and from the opportunities to work with motivated students in courses that originally inspired the SI Leaders to choose their majors and careers.

SI Faculty Projects

Currently, SI faculty in Accounting and Biology are working with SI Leaders to increase and improve the use of WileyPlus, an interactive online textbook site, in and out of the classroom. In Chemistry, Professor Marc Lazarus is including SI in his recitation sessions during lab hours, and one Mathematics instructor has teamed with his SI Leader to offer joint review sessions using a combination of SI and teaching strategies.

SI Faculty Networking

We are delighted to expand into General Physics this term with the support of Professor Dimitra Karabali, Physics Department Chair. The College has been generous in offering to continue last year’s work with Statistical Methods in Psychology with Professor Fred Phelps. Additional requests for SI have come from Sociology, Economics, and Computer Science instructors: Lehman faculty want to work with SI!

SI Faculty Development

Professional development opportunities with classroom technology are offered throughout the regular academic year and during the summer term for interested faculty. In the past year, we have worked to develop a collaborative engagement model for teaching  introductory science courses in addition to assisting in the development and design of digital storytelling project for an LEH seminar. Faculty-led discussions of best practices in teaching for introductory science , business, and mathematics courses are in the works: keep an eye out for the announcements!
