Martin L. Zwiren, Director, The APEX and Intercollegiate Athletics

Dr. Martin Zwiren wears two hats at Lehman College: director of Intercollegiate Athletics and director of The APEX (Athletics, Physical Education Complex). His first major responsibility when he joined Lehman was to open the $57 million facility in the spring of 1994. He holds three degrees in education: a Doctor of Education from Fordham University, a Master of Science from Temple University, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Dayton. He began his career as a physical education teacher and school administrator.

Before joining Lehman, Dr. Zwiren worked for more than 14 years at Fordham University, where he was the first director of the Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Center, a facility for sports and recreation. Prior to that, he worked in athletics programs at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.

He has served as president of the CUNY Athletic Conference, of which Lehman College is a member. He is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the NYC2012 Olympic Committee and on the Board of Directors of the Pro-Am Hispanic Basketball Association. He founded the Lehman Lightning Alumni Booster Club and launched the Lehman College Athletic Hall of Fame. In addition to sixteen men's and women's varsity sports, Lehman offers a broad range of intramural and lifetime sports programs.

Designed by award-winning architect Rafael Viñoly, The APEX is a multipurpose athletics center, providing fitness opportunities and classes to students, as well as to the larger community. It is the largest indoor public sports facility in the Bronx and an important new landmark in New York City. The complex was built for intercollegiate competition, physical education classes, and health science research. During the academic year, The APEX is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.- 10 p.m. On Saturday the building is in operation from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. The pool is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.- 10 p.m.

The summer schedule begins June 1 and runs through August 31, from 8 a.m.- 9 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.; and Sunday from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m.

The APEX Center's Facilities include:
  1. 50-meter, eight-lane indoor swimming pool (one of two in New York City to meet current Olympic swimming and water polo standards).
  2. Athletics arena for men's and women's basketball and volleyball, with seating for 1,000.
  3. Auxiliary recreation gym with 110-meter jogging track.
  4. Four championship glass-walled racquetball courts.
  5. Ballet studio for instruction and performance.
  6. Aerobics studio.
  7. Fitness center with the latest exercise equipment, staffed by an exercise physiologist.
  8. A free weight room.
  9. Four classrooms.
  10. Fully equipped athletic training room.
  11. Locker rooms for men, women, faculty, staff, alumni and students.
  12. Two Finnish Sauna rooms located in each locker room.

ATHLETICS

In addition to the Collge’s membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III (NCAA), Lehman is a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), The City University of New York Athletic Conference and the following local athletic conferences: Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming Conference, Collegiate Track Conference, and Metropolitan Athletic Track.
