Joyce, whose mentor at Lehman was Prof. Linda Keen, returned to Prof. Keen's class last year to talk to students about getting into graduate school. The visit was part of her tour of a number of colleges in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, where she helped Black and Latino students successfully navigate graduate school in math and the sciences. Joyce will earn her Ph.D. in math this spring from Boston University, where she founded the Black Graduate and Professional Students Organization. Her research is in the field of dynamical systems and computational biology. Applying this spring for teaching positions and post-doctoral fellowships, she found herself in the enviable situation of receiving multiple offers from top-ranked institutions. In addition to Berkeley, she was offered positions at the Mathematical Biology Institute at Ohio State University, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the Genetics Department at Harvard University. "The offers from West Point and Harvard arrived on the same day," she said, "and I have to say that was one of the highlights of my graduate career." Although the decision was difficult, she settled on Berkeley, where she will focus on genetics research. She will begin working there this summer.
