Congressman Salutes Success of Bronx Institute's GEAR UP
September 24, 2009
Congressman Eliot Engel issued a statement for the Congressional Record last week commending the Bronx Institute at Lehman College for its work on the GEAR UP program (Gaining Early Awareness and Education for Undergraduate Programs) and supporting the first annual National GEAR UP Day, which commemorated ten years of success for the program. He was joined in the commendation by fellow Bronx Congressional Representatives Joseph Crowley and Josť E. Serrano.
GEAR UP, designed to improve education and support college readiness for low-income students, has impacted more than 1.5 million students nationally to date.
In his statement, Congressman Engel noted that the three GEAR UP grants being administered by the Bronx Institute are assisting more than fifty schools in the borough, serving more than 8,500 Bronx students in grades 8, 9 and 11. Included in the services being provided are after-school, weekend, and evening classes and workshops for students and parents, as well as one-to-one counseling and college readiness support for all students and families.
Additionally, he pointed out, the Bronx Institute's technology program has distributed more than 6,500 laptops to students and will add to that number this year.
National GEAR UP Day was celebrated on September 18.
