Dr. Stefan Becker

Acting Dean, School of Natural and Social Sciences

Dr. Stefan Becker came to Lehman College in August 2010 to become chair of the Department of Earth, Environment, and Geospatial Sciences. Prior to this, he held positions at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh and the Justus-Liebig University, Giessen, Germany and had also worked at Tel Aviv University and the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

As a physical geographer, Dr. Becker has always been fascinated by our natural environment and the changes that humans have caused to it. He has been particularly interested in studying atmospheric processes and environmental change in various regions of our world. He has studied changes in extreme rainfall patterns in Tibet and in the Yangtze River basin in China and their impact on flood events, as well as air pollution dispersion from power stations and their impact on humans in South Africa, heat-stress for humans in Israel, and hurricane track and intensity changes in the Atlantic.

Dr. Becker received his doctorate and habitation from the Justus-Liebig University. His research has been published widely in a number of journals, including Theoretical and Applied Climatology, International Journal of Climatology, Climate Research, and Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment. He has received many grants for his research from national and international organizations.

He became acting dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences on August 6, 2012.
