CUNY Hybrid Initiative - Building Online Learning Communities in Your Classroom

Lehman College’s CUNY Hybrid Initiative has a goal to increase blended course offerings. The Office of Undergraduate Studies and Online Education is inviting you to apply to receive training and support to convert your existing traditional classroom writing intensive section to hybrid/blended online.

Why a hybrid course?

A hybrid/blended course (for which ½ the classroom meetings are conducted online and ½ in-person) can increase productive in-class time as well as engaged learning outside of class. Through a series of in-person and online workshops, this workshop series will:

  • Assist you in converting your course to Blackboard using pedagogically relevant methods;
  • Teach you the use of online and Web 2.0 teaching resources and rich media including digital audio and video;
  • Assist you in developing best online practices.

  • Attend a minimum of 5 two and a half hour in-person workshops (one of which will be conducted completely online);
  • participate in an online Blackboard forum from August to December;
  • Complete converting your hybrid/blended course at the end of the workshop and then share it with others.

To Apply

Complete and submit the attached application with a short statement of your interest, experience, course goals and expectations. Previous online teaching experience is not required. There will be an intermediate group for those instructors who have attended a Blackboard introductory session, have course material already online in Blackboard and/or have taught partially online.

Participants will receive a stipend, which offers cash and equipment valued at $1,000 including select software and a digital video camera kit. Faculty will complete a self-assessment for placement in beginner or intermediate levels and will be advised by a faculty mentor who has demonstrated experience with online instruction. The intermediate workshops are tentatively planned from 1:30-4 p.m. and will be held once per month this fall for 5 meetings on the following dates:  8/27/10, 9/22/10, 10/27/10, 11/17/10, and a synchronous online date in December TBD. Due to popular demand we have a second Friday group starting September 24, 2010. Additional meetings will be held October 29, November 19, December 10 and a synchronous online date in December TBD. A commitment to attend all meetings in your cohort is required.
