Prospective undergraduates apply either as entering freshmen or as transfer students. If you have ever attended college, in the U.S. or elsewhere, you must apply as a transfer student.

All applications should be accompanied by an application fee and official copies of documents (for example, high school transcripts; college transcripts in the case of transfer students; GED, SAT, and/or TOEFL scores).

Entering Freshmen

High school graduates who have not attended a college, university, or postsecondary institution apply as entering freshmen. Applications should be submitted by February 1st in order to receive full consideration for Lehman scholarships.

  • Admissions Criteria. Admission to Lehman College is based on a variety of factors, and we consider each applicant individually. The minimum requirements for admission as a first-time entering freshman are:

  • 16 credits in college preparatory classes
  • An average of 80 or higher in college preparatory classes and combined verbal and math SAT of 940 or higher or the ACT equivalent.

We also review each applicants overall academic performance.

We recommend the following distribution of high school courses:

  • 4 years of English
  • 4 years of Social Studies
  • 3 years of Mathematics
  • 2 years of Foreign Language
  • 2 years of Lab Science
  • 1 year of Fine Arts

All students are subject to City University of New York testing requirements. For more information, please see the website for Lehman's Office of Testing and Scholarships.

  • GED and TOEFL. Students with a GED score of 3100 or higher will be considered. Applicants who hold a student or other non-immigrant visa and were educated in non-English speaking schools must score 500 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to be considered for admission.

  • Freshman Year Initiative. The Freshman Year Initiative (FYI) at Lehman is an award-winning, nationally recognized program offering first-year students a supportive and carefully structured college experience. All entering freshmen participate in the program, which promotes an interdisciplinary curriculum, faculty collaboration, and peer support. To learn more, visit the Freshman Programs website.

Transfer Students

Lehman is committed to serving the needs of transfer students, and welcomes applications from students at other colleges. A high school graduate who has attended college in the U.S. or abroad, even for only one semester, must apply as a transfer student. Students submitting their applications by February 1st have improved chances of receiving scholarships and financial aid.

The minimum requirements are as follows:

  • Students transferring fewer than 12 college credits must satisfy Lehman’s freshman admission criteria.
  • Applicants transferring from 12 to 24 college credits must satisfy either freshman admission criteria or present a 2.75 cumulative grade point average.
  • Students with 24 or more credits must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.3 or better.
  • Students with a CUNY/SUNY AA or AS degree must have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or better.
  • Students with an AAS degree or degree from CUNY/SUNY must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.3 or better.

The CUNY/ACT Basic Skills Assessment Tests

CUNY/ACT Skills Assessment Tests ensure that entering freshmen and transfer students meet minimum requirements in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Reading and Writing Tests. Incoming students must take and pass the CUNY/ACT Skills Tests in Reading and Writing if they have not already met minimum requirements by receiving scores of
  • 480 or higher on the SAT Verbal, or
  • 75 or higher on the New York State Regents English Exam, or
  • 20 or higher on the ACT Verbal (the nationally administered ACT exam, not the CUNY ACT).
Mathematics Assessment Test (MAT). Incoming students must pass the first two portions of the CUNY Math Assessment Test (MAT) if they have not already met minimum mathematics requirements by receiving scores of
  • 510 or higher on the SAT Math, or
  • 75 or higher on the New York State Math Regents Exam (either the new Mathematics A or B Regents Examination, or the Sequential II or III Examination), or
  • 21 or higher on the ACT Math (the nationally administered ACT exam, not the CUNY ACT).
All incoming students must take the MAT for placement into the appropriate sequence of mathematics courses.

Transfer applicants and the CUNY/ACT Tests. Students who have earned a “C” or better in freshman composition or the equivalent earned through testing (e.g., AP or IB or a “College Now” type course taken in high school are exempt from the CUNY Skills Assessment test requirements in reading and writing). However, all students who plan to take introductory and/or higher level math courses, as well as courses in the natural sciences or social sciences, are required to take the Compass Test for placement purposes in mathematics.

New York State Law requires that new students submit immunization records for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) as well as a signed meningitis response form before registering for classes.

»Download the medical requirements form.

Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunization records. Students born after December 31, 1956 must show proof of immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella prior to their first registration. Acceptable proof of immunity includes: immunization cards from childhood, immunization records from high school or other schools you attended, or records from your doctor or clinic. You do not need to submit immunization records if you were born on or before December 31, 1956.
  • Where should I bring my immunization records? Bring your immunization records to the Lehman College Student Health Center, located in the T-3 Building, Room 118.

  • What if I can't locate my immunization records? If you do not have proof of immunizations, you must be immunized again or have a blood test (MMR titer) to show you are immune to all three diseases. MMR vaccines are available at the Student Health Center free of charge. Blood testing is also available but requires medical insurance or payment by the student. Please call (718) 960-8900 for further information.

  • Medical waiver. Any student with a medical condition that prohibits vaccination may submit a doctor's statement on letterhead for exemption. Some temporary medical conditions, such as pregnancy, may require blood titer clearance.

Evaluation of Transfer Credits

Transfer credit evalutions are completed on a rolling basis. All new transfer students receive an evaluation of transfer credits prior to their first registration at Lehman.

Approximately three weeks after you have been admitted as a transfer student, you will receive a letter from the Office of Transfer Evaluations notifying you that your transfer evaluation is complete. You will be requested to come into the Office of Transfer Evaluations to discuss your credit evaluation; at that time you will also receive a referral to an adviser for academic career planning and advisement on your impending registration.

CUNY community college transfer students may review an unofficial transfer credit evaluation online at http://tipps.cuny.edu.
