General Information

Courses are offered year-round, during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. (For information about summer course offerings, please see our summer programs page.)

In order to qualify to take a college credit-bearing course at Lehman, you must achieve the following test scores:

  • 75+ on the English Language Arts Regents
  • 75+ on the Math A Regents

OR

  • 480 on the SAT Math or equivalent ACT score
  • 480 on the SAT Verbal or equivalent ACT score

If you do not meet these scores, you will be offered the opportunity to take specifically designed workshops at your high school or at the college. These will help you qualify to take credit courses at a later time.

Spring 2010 Courses

The following college credit courses will be offered to high school students through the College Now Program at Lehman College during the spring 2010 semester. The cost of the program is free for students. To be eligible, students must have at least a 75+ on their E.L.A. Regents exam, or 480+ on the S.A.T. Verbal/Critical Reading section, or 50+ on the P.S.A.T. Verbal/Critical Reading section, and overall H.S. average of 80+.
* Exceptions are made for language and math courses.

Most of the courses listed below will meet after the high school day from 4:10–5:50 p.m. on a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule on the Lehman College campus. Fall Semester will begin the week of September 7 and will end the week of December 21. *Some classes begin the week of August 31.

**AAS 166-Introduction to African and African American Studies (T/Th, 3 credits). A thematic and methodological introduction to African and African American Studies from diverse disciplinary perspectives, including the humanities, social sciences and the arts. ** NEW COURSE OFFERING

ART 112-Introduction to Digital Imaging (M/W, 3 credits). Introduction to the creation of art and imagery using computers and digital media.

ECO 166-Fundamentals of Economics (T/Th, 3 credits). A study of macroeconomics and how the economy, as a whole, works.

ENG 110-Principles of Effective Writing I (M/W or T/Th, 3 credits). Focus on paragraph and essay development, summary and critical response to short texts. Emphasis on organization, language accuracy, grammar, and mechanics. Note: All students must pass this course in fulfillment of the College Requirement in English.

ENG 120-Principles of Effective Writing II (M/W, 3 credits). This course continues the work of ENG 110 advancing critical reading skills and essay development. An emphasis on analytical writing and research skills in different academic disciplines is developed. (Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete ENG 110).

**ENW 210-Introduction to Creative Writing (M/W, 3 credits). This course focuses on the reading, writing and analysis of fiction, poetry and dramatic literature with the intent of developing students' creative voices in these forms of creative writing. (Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete ENG 110 or receive approval from College Now program) ** NEW COURSE OFFERING

*MAT 172-Precalculus (M/W, 4 credits). Polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions with applications to problems in mathematics and sciences. Requires a 75+ in a Math Regents Exam and 80+ average in 2-3 years of Regents level math courses AND Math Placement Exam. Math Placement exam will be given at Lehman College on Tuesday December 8 and Wednesday December 9. To register for math placement exam contact college.now@lehman.cuny.edu. **PHI 171-Problems in Philosophy (M/W-3-4:30 pm, 3 credits). An introduction to philosophical thinking via a discussion of central questions such as "How should I live?" "What is the truth about reality?" "Can God's existence be known?" ** NEW COURSE OFFERING (This section of PHI 171 meets earlier in the day.)

PHI 172-Contemporary Moral Issues (M/W, 3 credits). Fundamental ethical theories and their applications to current moral issues, such as capital punishment, abortion, sexual equality and economic justice are critically analyzed in this course.

*PHI 172/CN02-Contemporary Moral Issues (T/Th-2:00-3:15, 3 credits). This section of PHI 172: Contemporary Moral Issues meets earlier in the day. (First day of class is Thursday Feb. 4)

POL 150-Contemporary Political Issues (T/Th, 3 credits). An examination of key domestic and international problems such as terrorism, globalization, immigration, gay marriage and abortion. These issues and others will be analyzed from the perspective of political science.

PSY 166-General Psychology (M/W, T/Th, 3 credits). Introduction to the fundamental concepts and methods of modern psychology. Consideration of the scientific basis of psychology and of the significant problems in the areas of learning, motivation, emotion, personality and social behavior.

SOC 166-Fundamentals of Sociology (M/W, 3 credits). Sociology, the scientific study of human behavior, studies the processes and patterns of social interaction, forms of social organization, and the influence of social structure, groups and institutions upon human behavior. In this course, students will learn the basic principles, theories, and scientific research techniques that sociologists use.

Meningitis Response Form Requirement

The Health Center requires all students registered for classes to fill out the Meningitis Response Form. Students must have the form signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the College Now office, located in Carman Hall 189. Students who do not fill out the form will neither be able to register for classes nor receive final grades. If you have any questions, call the main office at 718-960-8932.
