General Information

Courses are offered year-round, during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. (For information about summer course offerings, please see our summer programs page.)

In order to qualify to take a college credit-bearing course at Lehman, you must achieve the following test scores:

  • 75+ on the English Language Arts Regents
  • 75+ on the Math A Regents

OR

  • 480 on the SAT Math or equivalent ACT score
  • 480 on the SAT Verbal or equivalent ACT score

If you do not meet these scores, you will be offered the opportunity to take specifically designed workshops at your high school or at the college. These will help you qualify to take credit courses at a later time.

Fall 2010 Courses

Registration

The following college credit courses will be offered to high school students through the College Now Program at Lehman College during the fall 2010 semester. The cost of the program is free for students. To be eligible, students must have at least a 75+ on their ELA Regents exam, or 480+ on the SAT Verbal/Critical Reading section, or 50+ on the P.S.A.T. Verbal/Critical Reading section, and overall H.S. average of 80+.

* Exceptions are made for language and math courses. All classes meet on the Lehman College campus from 4:10 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. Class starts on the week of September 13 and final exams are held on the week of December 20.

ART 112 – Introduction to Digital Imaging – (M/W, 3 credits)- Introduction to the creation of art and imagery using computers and digital media.

ECO 166 – Fundamentals of Economics (T/Th, 3 credits) - A study of macroeconomics and how the economy works.

ENG 110 – Principles of Effective Writing I (M/W or T/Th, 3 credits) - English composition course that focuses on paragraph and essay development, summary, and critical response to short texts.

ENW 210 – Introduction to Creative Writing (T/Th, 3 credits) - This course focuses on the reading, writing and analysis of fiction, poetry and dramatic literature with the intent of developing students’ creative voices in these forms of creative writing. (Prerequisite: Students must successfully complete ENG 110 or receive approval from the College Now program)

*MAT 172 – Precalculus (M/W, 4 credits) – Students who want to enroll in the CN precalculus course must have completed the Algebra II/Trig course by June 2010 with an 80 average AND must have completed one Math Regents with a 75+. In addition, students must take a CN Math Placement exam. Register for Math Placement exam at college.now@lehman.cuny.edu.

MAT 186/189 – Math for Art and Design (M/W, 2 credits) – We will explore various works of art, and find the mathematics that is quietly embedded in them. We will be looking for mathematics relating to basic function theory. In our investigations, students will study topics such as the composition of functions, inverse functions, and the transformations of functions. Students who successfully pass the course with a grade of A, B or C will receive 2 college credits and are eligible to enroll in the College Now Precalculus course (MAT 172, 4 credits) in the spring
2011 semester.

PHI 171 – Problems in Philosophy (M/W, 3 credits) – An introduction to philosophical thinking via a discussion on central questions such as “How should I live?”, “What is the truth about reality?” or “Can God’s existence be known?”

POL 150 – Contemporary Political Issues (T/Th, 3 credits) – The course is an examination of key domestic and international problems such as terrorism, globalization, immigration, gay marriage and abortion. These issues and others will be analyzed from the perspective of political science.

POL 172 – Great Political Thinkers (M/W, 3 credits) - This course introduces students to the history of political science through the theories and writings of thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Rousseau and Marx. Topics such as justice, equality, freedom, power and moral and political rights will be analyzed and discussed.

PSY 166 – General Psychology (M/W, 3 credits) - An introduction to the fundamental concepts and methods of modern psychology. Students will study the scientific basis of psychology and of the significant problems in the areas of learning, motivation, emotion, personality and social behavior.

PSY 166/CN02 (T/TH, 3 credits – 2 p.m. - 3:15 p.m) - *Note the early start time for this section of PSY 166.

SOC 166 – Fundamentals of Sociology (M/W, 3 credits) - Sociology is the scientific study of human behavior. In this course, students will study the processes and patterns of social interaction, forms of social organization, and the influence of social structure, groups and institutions upon human behavior. they will learn the basic principles, theories, and scientific research techniques that sociologists use.

SPA 103 – Elementary Spanish I (T/Th, 4 credits) - For Native Spanish speakers. This is an intensive course that focuses on basic elements of grammar, vocabulary, reading and conversations. Meningitis Response Form Requirement

The Health Center requires all students registered for classes to fill out the Meningitis Response Form. Students must have the form signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the College Now office, located in Carman Hall 189. Students who do not fill out the form will neither be able to register for classes nor receive final grades. If you have any questions, call the main office at 718-960-8932.
