Theoretical Foundation of the I Lead Program
Stephen R. Covey, the Author of the book, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (first published in 1989), recently published a book called The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness (published in 2004). If you read these two books, you will notice that the conceptual framework of leadership has changed over time. Given the current technological changes and the challenges that we are currently facing worldwide, people who are sucessful leading others are often guided by Covey's latest definition of leadership: "Leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they come to see it in themselves" (Covey, 2004, p. 98). This is the type of knowledge that you will gain when you become an active member of the I Lead Program. The SEEK program at Lehman College firmly believes that you are a leader because you are investing time, energy, money to positively influence your future, your family, our community and the world.
Furthermore, as you become part of the I Lead Program, you will also learn about the Social Change Model of Leadership Development developed by Helen S. Astin and Alexander W. Astin. You can download a free copy of the boook, Leadership Reconsidered: Engaging Higher Education in Social Change from the Kellogg Foundation.
