LEONARD LIEF LIBRARY

Named for the founding President of Lehman College, the Leonard Lief Library is housed in a modern, four-story building, with an online catalog (CUNY+) and circulation system with access to over 125 networked electronic periodical indexes and full-text databases. More than 200 state-of-the-art computer workstations are available for student use, most with full Internet access.

The Library's homepage provides links to CUNY+, licensed electronic resources, and websites of interest to researchers. These electronic resources are available to the Lehman community from off-campus as well as onsite. All that is required is an Internet connection and a currently validated Lehman ID card.

The open stacks book collection of 575,160 volumes is supplemented by 713,752 microforms and a growing collection of 3283 films and videotapes. The Library subscribes to over 13,000 print and electronic periodicals. It is a designated depository for Federal and State government documents. The library collection supports coursework on undergraduate and graduate levels. An intercampus borrowing system, called CLICS, brings requested circulating books from CUNY libraries to Lehman for pick up by users. Graduate students and faculty may also avail themselves to electronic document delivery and Interlibrary Loan for materials not held at Lehman.

In addition to general and specialized non-circulating Reference collections, the Library has a Reserve collection that includes current textbooks. State-of-the-art laboratory classrooms, equipped with audiovisual and computer equipment, are used for research training by library faculty. As open labs, they provide students with access to the Internet, word processing and spreadsheets. Students can register for free workshops offered in the Lab on a variety of software applications. The Access and Technology Center, located on the second floor, provides assistive equipment and software to support students with special needs. A Graduate Research Room on the first floor has computer access resources reserved for this special constituency.

The Fine Arts Collection contains extensive holdings of recordings, music, multimedia CDs, as well as audiotapes and videotapes, which can be accessed at individual carrels equipped with video monitors and headphones. The Education collection contains K-12 curriculum materials, the ERIC microfiche collection, a special teaching collection of children's books, and computer workstations. The Periodicals division occupies two large rooms on the concourse level, and holds current journal titles, bound volumes and microfilm equipment for older materials. Special Collections contains college records, rare books, and the Bronx Institute Archives (local oral histories, books, atlases, photographs and documents).

Reference librarians are available to assist users during library hours. Librarians offer scheduled class orientations and bibliographic instruction. These sessions cover the most important research tools from all areas of the curriculum. Supplementing Reference Desk and instructional support, library faculty are available by appointment for individual consultations on special projects or involving in-depth research.

The Leonard Lief Library can accomodate 1200 people, with attractive lounge areas are located throughout the building. A limited number of Group Study Rooms are available for small groups of students. Students may also borrow laptop computers at the Circulation Desk. A lounge area is available near the front entrance for displays and food consumption.
