Speaking and Listening: Exploring Nonnative Speech and Listener Perception

Alison Behrman, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. In Fall semester, 2016, Prof. Behrman received a $50,000 American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation Clinical Research Grant to study "The Clear Speech Benefit in Spanish-Accented Speakers of American English." This study explores the acoustic and perceptual effects of speaking clearly on speech rhythm in native and nonnative speakers of English. Prof. Behrman also received an $11,000 PSCCUNY Round 47 grant to study "The Effect of Clear Speech on Listener Perception in Spanish-Accented Speakers of American English." This study explores the effect of speaking clearly on listener understanding in native and nonnative speakers of English.
