The CUNY LEADS Program: Linking Employment, Academics, and Disability Services
LEADS is a CUNY-wide program that provides students with disabilities the skills to make realistic academic and career choices. LEADS students receive personalized academic guidance and training for the world of work in areas including, but not limited to, the following:
- Job-seeking skills, such as résumé and cover-letter writing, interview skills, media and Internet use in job searches
- Job placement and internship assistance
LEADS Job-Readiness Initiatives
LEADS supports students and alumni with ongoing programming, so that they can obtain real, hands-on work experience. There are several initiatives; among them are Disability Mentoring Day (DMD), in conjunction with the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities, the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP), in coordination with CUNY Central and the Federal Office of Disability Employment Policy, and the Emerging Leaders program.
DMD is a nationally recognized event where students and alumni shadow a professional in their future field for an entire work day. Both the Mayor’s Office and the Office of Student Disability Services hold celebratory receptions to honor those who participated, where they can share their experiences and meet their peers. The WRP offers qualified applicants the chance to be placed in an employment pool, which hundreds of hiring employers in the public and private sectors can access. And Emerging Leaders helps place motivated students in business-oriented, summer internships.
These are all great examples of ways LEADS facilitates professional networking for future internship and full-time employment opportunities. LEADS also works closely with Lehman's Career Services Center to offer a series of professional development sessions, making sure you're well prepared. From résumé workshops to mock interviews, we help you plan for the transition from school to work.
