2003-2004 CUNY Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup Point Standings

Hunter Holds Cup For 6th Time In Seven Seasons

Hunter College was presented with the Commissioner’s Cup for the sixth time in seven years at the 2004 CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Award Ceremony, as the most successful Senior College athletic program for the 2003-04 academic year. The Hawks were followed once again by the College of Staten Island, who finished thirty points behind. CSI and Hunter have finished 1-2 in the final yearly points race each of the last seven years, with the roles reversed only once (following the 2000-01 season).

This year, Hunter captured nine of CUNYAC’s 18 senior college tournament championships (women’s tennis, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s swimming and diving, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field, men’s volleyball, women’s outdoor track and field and men’s outdoor track and field). Staten Island won three CUNYAC tournaments and five regular season titles, easily outdistancing John Jay College for second place. Interestingly, John Jay managed a third-place Commissioner’s Cup standing benefiting only from one title, in men’s basketball for the regular- season, among a bevy of second and third place points in eight additional sports.

It was also a year of firsts for NCAA Tournament appearances for three schools. In the five sports that earned CUNYAC teams an NCAA berth, four were first-timers. On the heels of the Hawks third consecutive women’s basketball crown, Hunter was the exception there. But the CSI softball and Lehman men’s basketball teams were able to play on the National Stage for the first time, despite having storied programs at the respective schools. CCNY, the oldest school in the CUNY system had the initial pleasure of competing in NCAA’s in two sports – women’s volleyball and men’s soccer.

Community Colleges
BMCC & HOSTOS Share CUNYAC’s Top School Honor

Unlike the senior college Commissioner’s Cup competition, it was a surprise to see newcomer Hostos Community College share the cup with Borough of Manhattan Community College, while Queensborough and Bronx Community College were only five points behind. The two latter schools shared the award last year. Hostos, with the fewest sports on the slate (3), won both the men’s and women’s basketball championships to earn their stake, while BMCC won the Cup for the sixth time behind a women’s volleyball title and runner-up finishes in men’s soccer and women’s basketball.

Following Hostos’ two CUNYAC Championships, both basketball teams reached the NJCAA Region XV playoffs. Remarkably, the teams reached the region semifinals during the women’s first season and the men’s second season as varsity programs. Queensborough’s spring was quite fruitful as well with the Tigers’ baseball and softball teams also entering the Region XV tournaments, and the softballers reaching the final game, leaving them one win shy of a berth in the National eight-team tournament.

On the All-American front, 26 CUNYAC athletes earned the prestigious honor, including Kingsborough’s top tennis duo, who reached the championship match at the National Junior College Tournament and the men’s 4x400 Meter Relay team that won the National title at NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. As a team, Kingsborough led the two other CUNYAC colleges at that event with a seventh place men’s finish. At the NCJAA Outdoors, a whopping 20 community college student-athletes earned all-american accolades.
