2002 CUNYAC Community College Baseball Championship
Broncos Throw a Three-Peat
Bronx, NY - Bronx Community College, led by a superb pitching effort by freshman Cesar Alvarez, won
the school’s third consecutive CUNY Athletic Conference / Sprint PCS Baseball Championship, beating
Queensborough Community College 3-1.
Doubling as an opening round NJCAA Region XV Tournament game, the Broncos had home field
advantage and a great deal of confidence with Alvarez on the mound.
“I love pitching against QCC,” said Alvarez, a recent graduate of John F. Kennedy High School. “In
the first game of the season, I threw a perfect game against them and the second time around I had a two
hitter. So I knew that if we hit, we would win the game.” Originally from the Dominican Republic, Alvarez
upped his record to 7-2 on the year after throwing a complete game three-hitter with seven strikeouts to
garner game Most Valuable Player honors.
The Broncos (15-13, 7-2 CUNY) notched a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead, with
the winning run being scored by Juan Maldanado (Bronx, NY) on an infield single by Tibby Almanzar. Three
double plays later and an insurance run on a Pablo Perez RBI double in the sixth inning made the outcome
inevitable.
Queensborugh (10-15, 6-3 CUNY) scored their only run in the top of the seventh inning when Roger
Mischel singled and was brought home on a Jeff Lulanaj triple.
“When this team plays defense well we usually win,” said BCC head coach Adolfo DeJesus, a
skipper of five CUNY titles. “Defense and strong pitching wins championships like this. I just hope that we
can continue this momentum through the Regionals.”
Unfortunately, Bronx traveled to Suffolk Community College the next day for the Region XV Quarter-finals,
but ended up on the short side, 10-6, ending their season.
