The CUNYAC Community College Men's
Basketball Championships are set to get underway this Monday, February 16. All of the action will take place at
Kingsborough Community
College, with the exception of Monday's quarterfinal game,
which will be held at either Bronx
Community College..
Bronx
and Borough of Manhattan Community College, the #4 and #5 seeds, will meet in Monday's
opening action at 6:00 pm. The winner will face #1 seeded Hostos, in a
semifinal game beginning at 5:30 pm.
on Wednesday, February 18 at Kingsborough
Community College. #2 seeded Queensborough will face #3 seeded
Kingsborough at 7:30 pm. in
the other semifinal on Wednesday in Brooklyn. The two semifinals winners will meet in the
championship game on Friday, February 20 at 7:30 pm, also to be contested at Kingsborough.
Top-seeded Hostos, who reached
the finals in their inaugural campaign last year, has earned the right to play either
Bronx or Manhattan
on Wednesday evening. The Caimans have
enjoyed an outstanding season, going 7-1 in CUNY. Sophomore guard Marvin Lynch (John Jay/Brooklyn, NY) leads the team in scoring
(17.7 ppg.) and is second in the league in rebounding (13.4 rpg.). Classmate Donald Hennie (Dwight Morrow/Bronx, NY) has also been solid as he is
averaging 15.1 points and 4.2 assists per game.
Bronx
has been led by sophomore Jorge Diaz
(Clinton/Bronx, NY) and 6'5” freshman center Dermott Hine (Evander/Bronx, NY) this season. Diaz, a guard, is scoring 19.0 points per
game and Hine has controlled the glass by averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore Garnett Wright (Queens,
NY) has been Manhattan's
top performer, averaging 13.0 points and freshman guard Igor Borukhov (Queens,
NY) is adding 11.9 points and 5.4 assists per game.
The second semifinal on Wednesday
will feature #2 seeded Queensborough and #3 seeded Kingsborough. Kingsborough will take to their home floor
with the league's leading scorer and rebounder Pierre Narcisse (James Madison/Brooklyn, NY), a freshman who is
averaging 25.4 points (4th in the nation) and a nation-leading 16.8 rebounds
per game. Sophomore point guard Dustin Yeates (South Shore/Brooklyn,
NY) has also enjoyed a standout season for the Wave. The 2002-2003 CUNYAC
Player of the Year is averaging 18.3 points and a league-leading 7.8 assists
per game. Queensborough, the defending
CUNYAC champions, will be led by sophomore Dewayne
Thomas (Rice/Queens, NY), who is second in the league in scoring at 19.0
points per game. Freshman forward Chris Carter (Holy Cross/Queens, NY) has
also enjoyed a solid season, and is averaging 14.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per
game.
