BROOKLYN, NY - The 2004 CUNYAC / Con Edison Women's Basketball Championship game is poised to be the most
competitive event since the inaugural one in 1998, when Borough of Manhattan Community College won their first of six straight
titles, as Hostos and BMCC will match up following decisive semifinal victories on Tuesday night. The final will precede the
men's championship game at Kingsborough Community College at 5:30 pm Friday night, February 20th.
The Hostos Lady Caimans topped Queensborough Community College, 98-35, in the opening semifinal of the night. A first
year program, the Lady Caimans (19-6) were led by freshman guard Nicola Moore (John Adams / Queens, NY) with a game-high
21 points. Freshman forward Tamisha Glenn (John Adams / Queens, NY) added 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Freshman forward Shanna Hamilton (Beach Channel / Far Rockaway, NY) and classmate Nyema Turner (Heritage School / New
York, NY) chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
“I'm ecstatic to be able to provide this opportunity for our student-athletes,” said Hostos head coach, Renee Bostic, whose
team was ranked 8th in the latest NJCAA National Division III Junior College poll. “What they've been able to achieve this season
has been remarkable, on and off the court.”
Queensborough was led by freshman guard Penelope Lymberatos (Francis Lewis/Queens, NY) with 15 points, as classmate
Kandyce Gunning (Bayside/Bayside, NY) added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Tigers, under promising
first-year head coach Yuriko Jung finish the season at 1-20.
“There's a rivalry already between us and BMCC,” said Bostic about the championship game. “Due to the fact that we split
our two games during the regular season and that we have recruited many of each others' players makes Friday night's final all
the more exciting. It's going to be promising for the future.”
In the nightcap, BMCC remained undefeated in CUNYAC Tournament history (7-0) with a 59-17 victory over their host,
Kingsborough. The Panthers (13-13) were led by sophomore guard Latoya Steele (Sheepshead Bay / Brooklyn, NY), the
defending Tournament MVP, with 20 points, while freshman Natasha Whitney (Health Professions / Brooklyn, NY) and sophomore
guard Veronica Sherman (Sheepshead Bay / Brooklyn, NY) also reached double-digits, posting ten points apiece.
“We're very excited for a competitive final for the first time in a few seasons,” said BMCC head coach Rodney Carr. “I'm not
disappointed we finished second, we're ready to defend our six straight championships on Friday night. We're counting on our
sophomores, Latoya and Veronica to lead the freshmen in the championship game.”
The Wave (1-20) were led by a pair of freshman guards, as Margaret Llewellyn (Canarsie / Brooklyn, NY) and Latoya
Patrick-Sanders (Wuertzberg American / Brooklyn, NY) each tallied seven points.
